MFA Plant Achieves Carbon Neutral Certification, Becoming BBAC's First “Zero-Carbon Plant”

[November 11, 2025, Beijing] BBAC’s MFA Plant was officially granted the ISO 14068-1:2023 carbon neutrality certification, following a rigorous audit conducted by DEKRA, a globally recognized authority in certification services. With this achievement, the MFA Plant has become the first automotive manufacturing plant in China to be certified under this international standard. As BBAC’s first “Zero-Carbon Plant”, the MFA Plant’s certification marks a significant milestone in BBAC’s journey toward low-carbon transformation.

“In our pursuit of high-quality development over many years, BBAC has placed great emphasis on sustainable growth,” said Jörg Bartels, President & CEO of BBAC. “We have made ‘responsible sustainability’ a core element of our strategic transformation and have actively explored multiple pathways for sustainable transformation. The establishment of our first ‘Zero-Carbon Plant’ further strengthens our sustainable competitiveness and sets an example for the industry’s progress toward carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.”

“This designation as a ‘Zero-Carbon Plant’ embodies BBAC’s commitment to long-term development,” said Zhang Zhengye, Party Secretary and Senior Executive Vice President of BBAC. “As a leading high-end automotive manufacturer in Beijing, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fulfilling our corporate social responsibilities, as we accelerate sustainable transformation across production, products, and the entire supply chain. Moving forward, BBAC will continue to fully and faithfully implement our new development philosophy, advancing sustainable development through concrete actions.”

As BBAC's pilot Zero-Carbon Plant, the MFA Plant has integrated sustainable planning and sustainable production principles into its daily operations since its inception. In recent years, the MFA Plant has made steady progress toward achieving carbon neutrality in production and manufacturing through a four-step strategy: self-made sustainable energy, efficient energy use, sustainable energy outsourcing, and carbon offset.

To increase its share of sustainable energy usage, the MFA Plant launched its photovoltaic (PV) power generation project in 2020. Since then, the plant’s PV system has undergone continuous upgrades in technology, equipment, and capacity. The area covered by the plant’s rooftop solar panels has exceeded 90,000 square meters, equivalent to about 12 standard football fields.

In addition, to further enhance energy efficiency, the MFA Plant has installed air-source heat pumps and waste heat recovery systems in recent years. These systems provide heat for process water, showers, space heating, and other applications. At the same time, the MFA Plant has introduced a digital energy management system equipped with intelligent equipment management technology. Through visualized, networked, and intelligent monitoring, as well as data collection, analysis, and control, this system enables real-time management of AHU air-conditioning unit operations. This optimization has significantly improved energy performance, reducing both overall energy consumption and carbon emissions. Thanks to these new energy management initiatives, the MFA Plant achieved a reduction of nearly 22,000 tons of CO₂e (Carbondioxide equivalence) from 2023 to 2024, equivalent to the annual carbon absorption capacity of approximately 1.2 million trees.

To offset residual carbon emissions, BBAC purchases high-quality carbon credits from domestic and international projects, such as Delta Blue Carbon. In addition to providing financial support for global emission reduction initiatives, this practice reflects BBAC’s strong commitment to environmental protection and its sense of corporate responsibility, setting a benchmark for the industry in pursuing carbon neutrality.

The launch of the Zero-Carbon Plant not only offers a replicable pathway for achieving carbon neutrality by BBAC’s other plants but also lays a solid foundation for the production of more eco-friendly products. Recently, the first model built on the MMA platform, the all-new CLA, rolled offline at the MFA Plant, marking the expansion of its pure electric portfolio to six models.

With its remarkable achievements in green production, BBAC was recognized as one of 65 “China's Top Runner for Industrial Carbon Peaking” by China Federation of Industrial Economics in 2024. It also received two honors from Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau: “2024 Low-Carbon Leading Enterprise” and “Outstanding Pilot Project for Advanced Low-Carbon Technology”. This year, BBAC became the first company in the domestic manufacturing industry to launch "Lush Mountains Book Corner", creating a green reading network that reaches all employees. By promoting environmental protection concepts through cultural empowerment, it aims to enhance employees' awareness of sustainable development and help BBAC create a multi-dimensional ecosystem of green culture.

While continuously exploring its own carbon-neutral pathway, BBAC has signed the “Ambition Consent Letter” with the majority of its manufacturing suppliers and provided sustainability training to several hundred suppliers across the value chain. This collaborative approach is designed to drive the realization of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals with the company’s supply chain partners. Looking ahead, BBAC will continue to fully and faithfully implement the new development philosophy, leverage the exemplary role of its Zero-Carbon Plant, and contribute greater strength toward a more sustainable future for the automotive industry in China.
